Villa to file formal complaint over officiating and referee selection

Aston Villa plans to submit an official grievance to the Premier League regarding the appointment of referee Thomas Bramall for their recent fixture against Manchester United. The club questions why a referee with greater experience was not assigned, especially given the high-stakes nature of the match at Old Trafford.

The controversy centers on Bramall’s decision in the 73rd minute, when he blew the whistle before Morgan Rogers could complete a goal. This incident prevented the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) from intervening on a potential infraction involving Rogers and goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. Unai Emery later emphasized that this malfunction was pivotal, ultimately influencing Villa’s chances of securing Champions League qualification.

At the time, the match was goalless. With Newcastle United trailing to Everton and Villa already reduced to ten men after Emi Martínez’s dismissal, a victory could have secured European football’s top tier. Instead, Bramall’s premature decision triggered a furious reaction from Emery and his coaching staff.

Following the incident, United scored twice through Amad Diallo and Christian Eriksen. Emery responded with sarcastic gestures, reflecting his frustration. The result was a 2-0 victory for United. Despite the loss, Villa finished sixth in the Premier League, earning a place in the Europa League next season.
